 Conversion from Pile Burning to Suspension Firing
TIBS have developed systems to convert existing boilers from pile burning to suspension firing. Conversion to suspension firing improves combustion, increases steam output, reduces refractory maintenance & increases boiler efficiency. Modern cane preparation produces a finer bagasse which burns well in suspension. TIBS have carried out in excess of 30 conversions,from pile burning to suspension firing, world-wide. TIBS conduct a boiler plant feasibility study prior to any modifications. This study involves a design appraisal of the original equipment & thermal study to calculate possible improvements in performance. A site survey confirms if a boiler is suitable for conversion & identifies other refurbishment needs. Provided TIBS are satisfied that a conversion will benefit the customer, we can then design, supply & erect a tailor made system. Suspension firing is achieved using either a TIBS dump grate or TIBS steam cleaned static grate system. The type of grate installed depends upon the particular site requirement.

 The Dump Grate System
TIBS have supplied over 50 dump grate systems world wide for new boilers as well as retro-fits to pile fired boilers. The dump grate is a flat bed constructed of cast iron blocks through which pre-heated combustion air passes. The cast iron blocks are set on shafts which rotate to discharge the ash into a hopper. The grate is divided into sections which are operated in sequence to allow de-ashing. The ash is then removed mechanically or manually. This sequenced system ensures that there is a minimum disruption to steam generation.

 TIBS Steam Cleaned Static Grate System
TIBS supply well proven steam cleaned static grates for bagasse suspension firing. The grate is constructed from cast iron blocks through which pre-heated combustion air passes. These blocks rest on either water tubes or air tubes for cooling. The ash is removed from the grate by steam nozzles set into the cast iron blocks above the grate level. The nozzles are operated in zones to allow the grate to be completely de-ashed with minimal disruption to the boiler firing rate. The ash is removed by being blown to a single transverse hopper.

 Advantages of TIBS steam cleaned static grate over pile burning are the same as for TIBS dump grate plus
1) Higher under grate air temperatures can be used due to the cooling effect of the support tubes. This allows bagasse of a higher moisture content to be burned in the boiler,
2) Ash is discharged to a single collection point for quicker removal,
3) No moving parts & therefore low maintenance.
